What We Are Doing Now
The City of Grand Forks is constantly working to improve how it does business. Part of that is being more sustainable and efficient. The 2009 - 2011 Sustainability Report describes "green" initiatives that the city has undertaken and 2012 activities are described in this website (see 2012 Sustainability Activities Summary). This web page tells you what we are doing NOW. Watch for regular updates and links.
Reducing Energy Use
The City is committed to reducing its energy use with a current focus on reducing electric usage in City buildings. Current efforts include:
- City employees are reducing energy use one office at a time with a "Turn Off Your Lights and Computers" campaign lead by the City's Green Team, a team of employees from departments throughout City government who lead by example and work together to encourage sustainability in the workplace.
- A coordinated effort to prioritize energy efficiency projects in all City buildings based on the results of energy audits completed in 2012. See the most recent report to the Service-Safety Committee here and watch for quarterly updates.
The mission of the Green Team is to promote the adoption of responsible practices by City government to make government and the community increasingly sustainable. We will encourage the City and our community to engage in practices consistent with sustainable living, including the conservation of resources (water, energy), waste reduction, recycling, pollution prevention, an increased reliance on renewable resources, and other initiatives to save money, promote social equity and preserve the environment.
